Critical Reflection: Integrating AI into Creative Workflows

Today, I engaged in a structured exploration of Gemini, an AI tool, to assess its potential for accelerating the prototyping of digital experiences. My objective was to transform a concept into a functional web application, thereby evaluating both the tool’s capabilities and my own creative process.

The decision to upgrade to the pro version of Gemini, via my Google One account, was informed by prior positive experiences with the platform. The investment proved worthwhile, as the AI demonstrated significant utility in both ideation and implementation phases.

Focusing on the theme of recycling, I tasked Gemini with generating an interactive Game Design Document (GDD). Through iterative prompting and targeted bug fixes, the AI produced a playable version of the incremental game. Notably, this process required a fraction of the time I would have otherwise spent—an estimated 20+ hours—while achieving a level of polish that might have been difficult to match independently. However, this efficiency came at the cost of a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanics and a reduced sense of ownership over the design decisions.

My prompts were intentionally concise, omitting details about prestige systems and providing only minimal information regarding research tiers and in-game currencies. This approach highlighted both the strengths and limitations of AI-driven design: while the tool excelled at generating structure and content, it struggled with nuanced or emergent gameplay elements that typically benefit from human insight. Further analysis will be required to determine how best to integrate complex systems, such as prestige mechanics, into future iterations.

In summary, this initial foray into AI-assisted game development was both productive and thought-provoking. The process underscored the value of AI as a collaborator, while also raising important questions about authorship, depth of understanding, and the evolving role of the designer in an AI-augmented workflow.
